Red Crane
In the present, I watch the ships , thinking of the poet W.B Yeat's “long legged fly across the stream” contemplating the “rim of knowledge where language falters”, an image I have long associated with the domain of painting.
To us, in the dawn, ships, slipping quietly through the city, transport our dreams. Or sometimes in their freight cargo, it seems they carry the whole city out on their decks to disappear into the Black Sea.

My focus as a painter from South Africa based in Istanbul, has shifted from the built environment and the dynamism of the city towards a more philosophical exploration of the ideas of passage, nomadism, home and exile; themes, which are indeed inherent to my recent performances and videos “Kadinin Sesleri” (Istanbul) and “Pitch Blue” (New York). In my most recent paintings, ships and other sea going vessels become the metaphors or the transporters of my thoughts around these issues.
